Accounting CVs are read in a specific order. A recruiter checks qualification status first - qualified, part-qualified, or qualified by experience - then the size and type of the organisation, then the systems, and only then the detail of the work. A CV that hides the qualification line halfway down page two loses on the first pass.
The second thing that determines the shortlist is the shape of the role. "Accountant" covers management accounting, financial accounting, group reporting, practice work and everything in between, and these are not interchangeable. The summary should say which one you do within the first sentence.
The most useful detail is usually the reporting cycle: what you close, how quickly, and what you are responsible for signing off. A five-day month-end close for a £40m turnover business tells a hiring manager more than a paragraph about attention to detail.
This example is written for a newly qualified ACCA accountant working in industry.

What recruiters expect
Before writing anything, it helps to know what the person reading is checking for. In this field that is usually a short, specific list:
Qualification status in the first two lines, including the body and the year, or the exam progress if part-qualified.
Company context: turnover, headcount, sector, group structure and whether the accounts are consolidated.
Ownership boundaries. What do you prepare, what do you review, and what does someone else sign?
Systems experience by name. ERP migrations and specific ledger systems are heavily filtered.
The reporting framework you work under - UK GAAP (FRS 102), IFRS, or local standards.
Recommended CV structure
This is the running order the example uses. It is a starting point rather than a rule, but the order reflects what tends to be read first in this profession.
Profile — Three or four lines positioning you for the role.
Professional Qualifications — Completed certifications with the issuing body.
Core Skills — Grouped skills, for example "Languages" and "Tooling".
Professional Experience — Paid roles, in reverse chronological order.
Education — Degrees, diplomas and school-leaving qualifications.
Professional Memberships — Bodies you belong to, with membership numbers where relevant.
Languages — Spoken languages with CEFR levels.
Sections worth adding
Continuing Professional Development — Expected for qualified members; keep it to recent, relevant courses.
System Implementations — Worth separating out if you have led an ERP or consolidation tool rollout.
Skills worth including
Grouped rather than listed in one block. Grouping makes a long list readable and shows that you can tell the difference between the things you use daily and the things you have touched.
Financial Reporting
Month-end close · Year-end statutory accounts · Consolidation · IFRS · UK GAAP (FRS 102) · Audit liaison
Beyond the technical list: Explaining numbers to non-finance managers, Working to a hard reporting deadline, Challenging a figure politely, Supervising and reviewing junior work. These belong inside your experience bullets, demonstrated, rather than in a list of adjectives.
Example professional summary
Three or four lines, positioned for the role rather than describing your personality. Two versions you can adapt:
ACCA-qualified accountant (2024) with five years in industry, currently owning the month-end close for three UK entities with combined turnover of £42m. Experience across statutory accounts under FRS 102, VAT, and the external audit relationship, with a recent NetSuite implementation.
Part-qualified accountant (ACCA, 11 of 13 exams) working in a shared service centre supporting eight European entities. Strong on reconciliations, intercompany and accounts payable, with SAP S/4HANA experience and a track record of clearing legacy balance sheet issues.
Writing your experience
The difference between a CV that gets a call and one that does not is almost always in the bullet points. Each pair below shows a real rewrite of the kind of line that appears on most CVs in this field.
Weak
Responsible for month-end close.
Stronger
Own the month-end close for three UK entities with combined turnover of £42m, delivering the reporting pack to the board by working day five.
Scope, scale and the deadline, which is the single most comparable fact in management accounting.
Weak
Prepared reconciliations.
Stronger
Cleared a £180k unreconciled balance on the intercompany account that had carried forward for three quarters, and introduced a monthly matching process that has kept it at nil since.
A specific problem, a value, and the control that prevented recurrence.
Weak
Helped with the audit.
Stronger
Acted as main contact for the external audit across two years, preparing the fixed asset, accruals and revenue samples; both audits completed with no adjustments and no management letter points.
Audit outcome is a verifiable quality signal and rarely used.
Weak
Used Excel to analyse data.
Stronger
Rebuilt the monthly variance pack in Power Query, replacing four hours of manual copying with a refresh, which moved commentary from the afternoon of working day six to the morning of working day four.
Names the technique and converts the time saved into an earlier deadline.

Common mistakes
Burying the qualification
Qualification status is the first filter in almost every accounting recruitment process. It belongs in the headline or the first line of the profile.
No sense of company size
Preparing management accounts for a £3m business and a £300m group are different jobs. Give turnover, headcount or entity count.
Duties copied from the job description
Six bullets of standard responsibilities make every accountant look identical. Add the deadline, the value, the number of entities or the improvement.
Treating Excel as too obvious to mention
Excel is still screened for. Name the specific techniques - Power Query, SUMIFS, pivot models, lookups - rather than claiming "advanced Excel".
Omitting the reporting framework
IFRS and FRS 102 experience are not interchangeable to a hiring manager, and one of them is usually a requirement.
ATS considerations
Applicant tracking systems behave differently by sector, and generic advice is often wrong for a given field. These points are specific to accountant applications:
Put the qualification abbreviation and the full name in the document: "ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)".
If part-qualified, write it as "ACCA part-qualified (11 of 13 exams passed)". Vague phrasing is treated as evasive.
Name the ERP exactly. "SAP" alone will not match a filter looking for "S/4HANA" or "SAP FICO".
Include both "month-end" and "month end" somewhere; adverts are inconsistent and parsers rarely normalise.
Write "accounts payable" and "accounts receivable" in full rather than "AP/AR", which many parsers split badly.
The Minimal ATS layout is built for this, and the ATS guide covers what parsers do to a file in more detail.
Questions about accountant CVs
ACCA, ACA or CIMA - does it matter which I have?
It signals a route rather than a ranking. ACA is associated with practice and audit, CIMA with management accounting in industry, and ACCA sits across both. Employers usually accept any of them for industry roles and say so in the advert.
How do I present a part-qualified status?
State the body, the number of exams passed, and the expected completion date if you have one. Recruiters place part-qualified candidates constantly and need the detail to match you to the right level.
Should I list every system I have touched?
List the ledgers and ERPs you have worked in properly, and leave out anything you have only seen. ERP experience is one of the few things that genuinely shortens a handover.
How long should an accountant CV be?
Two pages is standard. One page is difficult once you have multiple roles, because the systems and framework detail matters. Beyond two pages, cut older roles to a single line.
Do I need to include exam results from school?
Only early in your career, and only because some employers still screen on A-level or equivalent grades. Once you are qualified, one line for the degree and one for the qualification is enough.
